Shopping in Sri Lanka can be quite an interesting adventure. There are many possibilities to buy some great items and gifts for you and your loved ones back home The island has it’s own unique items such as handcrafted wooden ornaments, furniture, batik, silver and brass wear, silver & gold jewelry that have been crafted in traditional designs. Known as “Ratnadveepa” – “the island of gems” to ancients traders, gems and semi-precious stones are popular purchases too. The island has been a haven for high quality spices as well and you have the opportunity to buy some of this to take back hime.

Especially Colombo and some of the main cities such as Kandy also has casual clothing stores for adults and children.  Sri Lanka being a major apparel exporter to Europe and the USA, the clothing available are in style, of good quality and at bargain prices.  While main focus is on summer wear, fall and winter wear such as jackets are available as well.  Other than in the clothing stores where prices are fixed, feel free to bargain.

Unfortunately, you may come across items made out of ivory, turtle/tortoise shell, coral, sea shells, and ebony wood. We are sure you will not purchase such items as they encourage illegal trade and cause damage to the environment.
