A finely sculptured 12 m high Buddha statue carved out of a single granite rock face. Built in the 5th century during King Dhatusena reign. This magnificent monument of great beauty is located about 30 km from Sigiriya. There is a similar but of lesser architectural quality statue in Sasseruwa. Folklore states that the to statues were built by competing master and pupil at the same time. Seeing the superior, elegant & perfect workmanship of the Aukana Buddha done by the master, the pupil stopped his work of the Sasseruwa Buddha statue knowing the futility of trying to outdo his master. This site is about 12 km away from Aukana.
