This magnificent monument of great beauty is located about 30 km from Sigiriya. There is a similar but of lesser architectural quality statue in Sasseruwa. Folklore states that the to statues were built by competing master and pupil at the same time. Seeing the superior, elegant & perfect workmanship of the Aukana Buddha done by the master, the pupil stopped his work of the Sasseruwa Buddha statue knowing the futility of trying to outdo his master.
